The Museum Of Science and the Cosmos is a unique place, a mix between a traditional museum and a theme park, where the visitor has the chance to learn about the laws and principles of nature, from the functioning of the body to that of the stars.

Museum of Science and the Cosmos

Opened in 1993 by initiative of the Tenerife Council and Astrophysics Institute of the Canaries, the Museum of Sciences and the Cosmos has served to translate the fascinating discoveries made by the study of the universe into a language that can be understood by all.

The museum is in permanent evolution and aspires to be a scientific dissemination centre suitable for all audiences. At the same time, it aims to serve as a didactic resource for teachers and students of all levels. Ultimately, however, most important of the museum's activities is to promote a positive attitude towards science, presenting it as a component present in everybody's daily life.

Museum of Nature and Man

Where: Calle Fuente Morales 1, 38021, Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am to 7 pm. Closed on Monday and December 24, 25 and 31 and January 1 and 6

Museum of Nature and Man

The important coming and going of scientists during the 18th and 19th centuries (Darwin, Lylell and Humboldt among others) who found labs in these privileged islands to conduct their research into nature and especially human beings, and the gradual accumulation of private and public collections, were the material and intellectual base on which the Tenerife Council, in the 1950s, created two museums: the Museum of Natural Science and the Tenerife Archeological museum.

Both museums finally converged, along with the Canary Institute of Bioanthropology, in an ambitious and modern museum, the Museum of Nature and Man which seeks to offer the citizens of the islands and its many visitors all its contents, collections and knowledge, accumulated for decades of scientific research and work, to provide an an accurate and pleasant vision of the natural richness of the Canary Islands.

The collection of the museum and its interest in education is complemented by an avant-garde design. Everything revolves around the notion of interpretation, and visitors are free to tour at their ease in the independent thematic units.
